croup & granola

my productivity is directly proportional to the hour of the day. i always start out strong cleaning and baking and folding clothes while the kids eat breakfast. by lunch im checking my email in between reading books, and by evening i am an ice cream eating sloth on the couch.

my neighbor rachel and i split a 25 lbs bag of rolled oats and currently a delicious batch of granola is baking in the oven. hazelnuts! almonds! sunflower seeds! raspberries! cherries! oh my! i plan on mixing this up with some plain bran flakes and making some bulk cereal. i've got to get some clear canisters in various sizes for the kitchen. i've got the basic baking needs, popcorn seeds and the like in canisters already but there are other things that i need smaller sizes for (different kinds of nuts, seeds, dried fruit, cookies, situations like now where i have a lot of granola, etc). i am going to make another go at making bread. all of my previous attempts have been way too dense so i gave up. my friend olivia sent me some bread recipes that i have archived in my email. time to bust those out methinks.

5 pm : i'm not tired!!

my kids have croup. auggie started getting sick on saturday, smack dab in the middle of our date of course. fever, coughs, lethargy. then yesterday morning olive woke up barking like a seal and had a fever of 100+. aug is on the mend but olive is in the thick of it. my poor beebs.

EDIT: granola is done. if i were a hobbit the following meal would be called "elevensies" but since i'm not ill simply say im having "brunch" or "second breakfast".

Ug. Croup here too, for the first time in over ten years. It was weird to be back to being unable to sleep for listening to your kid wheeze and cough.

Hi Jenny!

I almost couldn't do it, but since I have very little time for bread baking, I thought I would share with you Grammie Darrow's brown bread recipe (my dad has perfected it since Grammie Darrow has passed on):

Brown Bread:

1 cup rolled oats
2 cups boiling water
1/2 cup molasses
2tsp salt
1/4 cup shortening
1 tbsp dry yeast
1/4 to 1/2 cup water
1 tsp sugar
5 1/2 cups flour

1) Pour boiling water on rolled oats. Allow to stand for one hour. Add molasses, salt, and shortening.

2) Dissolve dry yeast in the lukewarm water with sugar. Add flour; knead until dough is elastic. Let rise. (Leave it in the bowl. Dad puts a tea towel over it and either puts it in a sunny window, or near a heater)

3) Punch the dough down once, and make smaller balls to put in bread pan. Dad makes two balls per bread pan. Let rise again.

4) Bake one hour in 300-325 F.

Et Voila! Grammie Darrow's famous brown bread!

If you try it, I hope it works out!
