AND WE'RE BACK! from camping that is. did you even notice i was gone? im just going to picture you nodding your head in an eager up and down motion now. in summary, we had a blast! i've been sort of bummed at the idea of never taking a vacation again for the next oh, 5 yrs while david is in school and things are tight. meaning he couldn't just up and take time off work and lollygag around having a gay ol' time with the fam when there is money to be made to go for those pesky bills that keep coming every month. but the 48 hour camping trip we just got back from actually felt like a vacation and we both agreed to stop being mopey about future little jaunts. i mean come on, if this is as good as it gets we are in paradise.
some photos and stories now:
tuckered out from exploring
i won't tell you exactly how many s'mores i had on this trip but let's just say mama brought home some extra padding in my caboose. [yes i realize i have no "caboose" to speak of, stop reminding me!] at least one breakfast was followed up by some pre-exploring s'mores. s'all im gonna say.
we went to the lake during the day and poor auggie thought it was the real beach. he kept asking where the crabs were! i couldn't stop laughing! this is what olive did pretty much the entire time we were on the beach.
the first night we all just snuggled together and fell asleep, the kids (and by kids i mean olive) slept an astounding 10 hrs straight! the second night david and i decided to stay up late together and just talk, hang out, etc. he was putting the kids down and i was sitting around the fire alone. after about maybe 20 minutes a raccoon comes out of the woods and starts coming towards me. i make a clapping noise and stand up, it runs away only to return - this time running! i definitely said the S word and screamed DAVID! DAVID GET OUT HERE NOW!! i felt like such a dorky city girl like "omg nature touched me!" but it was kind of scary i swear! a possum wandered into our campsite on the first evening too.
i am very proud to say that i slept on the ground (well, quasi-slept) two nights. i am a very finicky sleeper. i can't help it!
more photos on my flickr if you're into that sort of thing

That looked like you had fun. Camping as a kid is awesome, especially before you have a "I'm hot & sticky" radar. What name are your flickr photos under?

That looks like so much fun! Where do you guys go?
alum creek state park
GAHH I love camping but I'm the same way. I can't sleep very well on hard surfaces. We went to sturbridge village on one of our honeymoon trips (we took a bunch of day trips to places in the area) and it's like one of those places where they show you how people used to live in the 1800's.
Well, we were walking around this house where they actually let you try on clothes and touch things and sit on the furniture. I sat on the bed and was SO happy for my pillowtop mattress!!
p.s.
sorry for the buge comment, that got out of hand
yay for camping fun! looks like the kids had a blast. i especially appreciated the little branch seat you guys discovered.
what a neat vacation. i don't even like camping but you guys make it look fun. :)
I've never been to alum creek, but as the weather gets cooler we want to start camping again. What were the campsites like? We like primitive camping where you actually feel like you're in the woods, lol. Was it like that? or more of like a mowed grass patch with the driveway, etc.? T
salty there are very few awesome tent camping sites there but i highly recommend A21, A9, or A2. those are the only ones that i felt had any sense of "woods" to them. the rest were strips of land next to a parking spot probably more suitable for a camper. oh none of the above mentioned sites can be reserved but of the reservable ones we didnt find a single one we felt was as cool as the one we had! (and we drove through the entire park!)
thanks for the tip! if you don't mind my asking, how much does it cost to get one of the sites you mentioned? We're planning to go camping this weekend and are debating whether to try someplace new, or just stick with the one we know. Price would be a deciding factor, lol.
hm i think we went for 2 nights and it cost us $52
